A deadly militant assault on a paramilitary force headquarters in Peshawar, northwest Pakistan, left three personnel dead and several others wounded on Monday, police and security officials confirmed. The attack targeted the Frontier Constabulary (FC) headquarters, a key paramilitary installation located near a high-security cantonment zone.
According to police officials, the assault began with two suicide bombers, one of whom detonated explosives at the facility’s main entrance. The second bomber entered the compound and triggered another blast deeper inside the premises, causing additional casualties. The coordinated explosions were followed by intense gunfire as security personnel attempted to neutralize the attackers.
Authorities reported that at least five people were injured, including FC personnel, who were rushed to the Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar for treatment. Emergency responders and bomb disposal teams were deployed as security officers launched a sweep to ensure no additional assailants were hiding within the compound. Roads leading to the area were immediately sealed off as part of the lockdown.
A senior security official, speaking anonymously, revealed that the first suicide bomber blew himself up at the entrance, creating a breach that allowed the second attacker to infiltrate the compound. Investigators are now assessing whether the attackers received local assistance and whether more militants were involved in planning the assault.
The attack comes at a time of escalating tensions in Pakistan’s northwestern region, where incidents targeting security forces have increased over the past year. Islamabad has repeatedly accused militants operating from Afghan soil of orchestrating cross-border attacks, a claim that has added strain to Pakistan-Afghanistan relations. No group immediately claimed responsibility for Monday’s assault.
The targeted FC headquarters lies in a densely populated part of Peshawar close to military zones, raising alarm about the militants’ ability to carry out such a high-impact operation in an area with heightened security presence. Witnesses reported hearing multiple explosions followed by extended gunfire, prompting panic among nearby residents.
Pakistan’s security forces have been on high alert in recent months as attacks have resurged, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Monday’s strike highlights the persistent threat posed by insurgent groups despite ongoing counterterrorism operations.
Authorities have vowed a thorough investigation into the attack and pledged to strengthen security at key installations across the region. The identities of the attackers and their organizational links are still under review.
